CBGB
Opened in 1973 by Hilly Kristal, the legendary punk rock club at 315 Bowery in New York City is probably best known for jumpstarting the careers of bands such as The Ramones, Television, The Talking Heads, and Blondie. The CBGB was the focal point during the most influential era of the city’s infamous underground rock scene. Most everyone who was anyone played or attended the notoriously dingy venue during its 33 year run, before it was forced to close due to rent increases. In perhaps the ultimate example of Lower East Side gentrification, the space is now a boutique for men’s designer John Varvatos.
