If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you’ll know that I love watches, I love cars, and I love diamonds. So naturally, a Cartier watch encrusted with diamonds that takes it design cues from classic cars is going to catch my interest. Hell, if this thing had a vagina, played rock n’ roll music, and could mix a martini, I might be set for like. The watch above, a 36mm stainless steel Cartier Roadster with 1.95 carats of aftermarket VS-2 Clarity F-colored diamonds, recently sold for $4,048- about a grand less than a new, non-diamond emblazoned stainless Roadster- which is one hell of a deal.

Calling themselves “Les Sapeurs” they are members of the SAPE movement, an acronym for Société des Ambianceurs et Persons Élégants. Despite living in an area with a per capita income of roughly $100 per year, these man will go to extreme lengths to acquire clothing often worth thousands of dollars. Photographer Danielle Tamagni has released a fascinating book on the subject, Gentlemen Of Bacongo, from which these images were taken.

Ferrari 246gts Dino

I remember being in fifth grade or so and going with my dad to have one of his cars serviced (I believe it was the 928.) In the corner of the lot was this incredibly cool little red sports car with bodywork that was undeniably Italian, more specifically that of Pininfarina. The asking price was $40,000, which in my mind seemed low for such a beautiful creation. “It’s because” my father explained, “the purists don’t consider it a real Ferrari.” Thus was the stigma of the 246 Dino for many years. The only Ferrari to ever be powered by a 6-cylinder engine, the car was named after Enzo Ferrari’s only (legitimate) son Alfredo “Dino” Ferrari. Dino had died at the age of 24 from complications from Muscular Dystrophy. The tribute made sense, as Dino had suggested to his father the use of a 1.5 liter V6 for Formula 2 racing. The 246GTS that was produced, though assembled in the Maranello factory and sold through Ferrari dealerships, was never actually badged as a Ferrari. The famed prancing horse was replaced by rectangular yellow badges bearing “Dino” in script, and while it is common to see a prancing horse on the rear of some 246’s today, those were aftermarket additions. However collectors today seem to see the same appeal that my eleven year-old self did, as I recently came across a 1974 example at Cooper Classic Cars here in Manhattan that had an asking price of $186,000.
